Please help, my husbands toe is disgusting. ?

He isn't insured, so we are trying to avoid the doctor by all means, we are not rich. Anyways, his big toe is a little swelled, red, and has puss coming out. He's been cleaning it with peroxcide. We think its caused by 1 of 2 things: An infection from ingrown toenail.....he cut the toenail, but now its like this. Or number 2 he works stripping and waxing floors.....this may have gotten through his shoe? What are your thoughts about how serious this is? 10 points...thanks!
